How to Wash Synthetic Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are used to create a longer-haired look. They are made out of human hair or synthetic materials. The synthetic varieties are much less costly and come in more than just natural hair colors. After your hair dresser applies the synthetic hair extensions to your real hair, you are responsible for washing them and keeping them from becoming damaged.

Instructions

    • 1

Comb your hair just before you wash it. This releases any tangles. It is best to comb from the ends down and incrementally work your way up.

    • 2

Wet your hair with lukewarm water. Hot water may be more comfortable, but it deteriorates the synthetic hair fibers and shortens the extensions' lifespan.

    • 3

Lather the hair and extensions with a mild shampoo. Use a shampoo without a bunch of unpronounceable chemicals as ingredients. All-natural is best.

    • 4

Rinse the shampoo out of your hair and hair extensions. Apply a mild conditioner, and rinse.

    • 5

Towel-dry your hair as best you can and then allow nature to finish the process. Do not use a blow dryer. It damages synthetic fibers.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you are ready to put your hair up, use a brush that has soft bristles. Harder bristles will tug at the synthetic hair extensions.

  • Do not attempt to brush your synthetic hair extensions when they are wet.

  • Make sure you wear a swimming cap when swimming in a pool or ocean. The website Hair Extension Guide warns that chlorine and salt water cause harm to synthetic hair fibers.
